FAQ
What is the busiest port in the world?
Shanghai handles about 49 million TEU a year, more than any other port since 2010. By total cargo tonnage Ningbo-Zhoushan leads with over 1.3 billion tonnes. Port Hedland leads bulk exports and Miami leads cruise passengers.
What does TEU mean?
TEU stands for twenty foot equivalent unit, the size of a standard 20 foot container. A 40 foot container equals two TEU. Port container volumes are quoted in TEU to compare ports fairly.
What is a transshipment hub?
A port where cargo is unloaded from one ship and reloaded onto another to reach smaller regional ports. Singapore, Jebel Ali, and Colombo are classic transshipment hubs that thrive on location rather than local cargo.
Which port is the largest in Europe?
Rotterdam has been the largest port in Europe for over sixty years, handling about 13 million TEU and roughly 400 million tonnes of cargo. Antwerp-Bruges ranks second and Hamburg third for containers.
Why do canals matter so much to shipping?
The Suez and Panama canals shorten routes by thousands of kilometers, saving fuel and time. Drought, blockages like the 2021 Ever Given grounding, or congestion can shift traffic between routes and ports within weeks.
When did container shipping begin?
Malcolm McLean sent the first modern container ship, the Ideal X, from Port Newark in April 1956 with 58 boxes. The standard steel box cut port costs so sharply that it reorganized global trade within two decades.
