Overview
Founded by the Spanish in 1537 as the port for Lima, Callao shipped Andean silver to Panama for transfer to Spain and was later guarded by the Real Felipe fortress. Today it handles most Peruvian container trade. The new Chinese built megaport at Chancay to the north, opened in 2024, now competes for transpacific services.
