Overview
An ancient Swahili trading city on an island whose Kilindini harbor serves Kenya and the landlocked hinterland of Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and eastern Congo. The Northern Corridor road and the Standard Gauge Railway to Nairobi, opened in 2017, carry cargo inland. Fort Jesus, begun by the Portuguese in 1593, guards the old harbor.
