Overview
Sultan Said bin Sultan moved the capital of the Omani empire to Zanzibar in the 1840s, turning the island into the leading market of the Swahili coast for cloves, ivory, and enslaved people until British pressure closed the slave market in 1873. The coral stone town is a World Heritage Site.
