Gioia Tauro
The largest container port in Italy
Location and Figures
Overview
A transshipment hub on the Calabrian coast built in the 1970s for a steelworks that was never completed and converted to container handling in the 1990s. Its deep water and position close to the main Suez to Gibraltar shipping lane let giant ships drop boxes for feeder services across the Mediterranean.
