Marseille-Fos
The largest port in France by tonnage
Location and Figures
Overview
Founded by Greek settlers from Phocaea around 600 BC as Massalia, Marseille has been the main French gateway to the Mediterranean ever since. The old city basins now handle ferries and cruise ships, while the industrial Fos basins to the west, developed from the 1960s, take crude oil, LNG, steel, and containers.
