Overview
During the Edo period seclusion, the artificial island of Dejima in Nagasaki harbor was the only place where Dutch merchants could trade with Japan, alongside a Chinese quarter. Through it flowed silk, sugar, and Western books on medicine and science. Nagasaki later became a major shipbuilding center.
