Built by Claudius and expanded by Trajan with a hexagonal basin to replace the silting river harbor of Ostia. Grain ships from Egypt and North Africa unloaded here for barges up the Tiber to Rome. Silting of the coastline left the remains inland near Fiumicino airport.
